WhatsApp messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be  decoded by even the company itself. Though some claim that end-to-end encryption is not safe from the social point of view, violation of privacy of billions poses a counter logic. One can also opt out of advertisements by Facebook on the app by simply not sharing his/her phone number.
