OpenStack released the latest version, Icehouse, the concept of Database as a Service (DBaaS). Tesora's goal is to help organizations to create and deploy database-based OpenStack applications who don't have a great deal of expertise with database administration.  The focus is to make database just another service rather than a central focus. Comparison between DFSS and DMAIC

An article in iSixSigma magazine points out the basic similarities and differences between DFSS and DMAIC. It is a well written article which explains highly technical term in layman’s language. The DMAIC methodology is almost universally recognized and defined as comprising of the following five phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and control. DFSS is the acronym for Design For Six Sigma. Unlike the DMAIC methodology, the phases or steps of DFSS are not universally recognized or defined.

The human element is critical in applying big data

Human element plays an important role in successful application of big data.  Companies mainly focus on the tools (like Hadoop), using the R language, MongoDB and a few others.  But, it is also very important to understand what kind of data is available, what kind of data is needed and what role an expertise in computer science and applications, modeling, statistics, analytics play. Very often single source of big data leads to incorrect conclusion. So, human power is very much needed. To know more on this topic, go through the article link by Daniel Kusnetzky (a reformed software engineer and product manager):

How target marketing can backfire

Nowadays, companies find that targeting a particular audience is much more fruitful than targeting mass audience. But sometimes, it may happen that targeted audience do not buy the product, and hence targeted marketing backfire. A recent study conducted at Dartmouth College, explores what happens when identity marketing misses the mark. The research was based on two types of identity marketing,

Marketing that simply references consumer identity

Marketing that explicitly ties consumer identity to a brand purchase

This research suggested that consumers are less likely to buy a company’s product which explicitly links an identity. The reason behind this is, while people may be drawn to brands that fit their identity, they are also more likely to desire a sense of ownership and freedom in how they express that identity. Online medical information – bane or boon for the healthcare system?

A recent study, conducted across the major cities in India suggested that doctors have been facing problem to deal with patients who use internet to find the cause of a particular disease. Internet in general and medical websites is becoming doctors' worst nightmare. We cannot deny internet's potential in providing healthcare information. But debate is, whether too much information is dangerous or not. In this scenario different doctors are providing different opinion about the use of internet. Some of them find that internet is useful, and they also feel quite comfortable while discussing the diseases with well-informed patient. An analysis on a health information site suggests that only 10% of the searches land up on reading articles about symptoms of diseases. In fact, health websites play a far more diverse role than doubling up as an online doctor or symptom checker. Doctors are also afraid of wrong information which is available in net. Great customer service is not about being perfect

An article by Sue Cockburn, Founder of Growing Social Biz, conveys that it's not that the customer is always right. They're not. But, they need to see us owning the problem when they believe they are right. Arguing to prove we are right and they are wrong may allow us to win the battle, but we'll likely lose the client. Clients deserve the benefit of the doubt. Maybe sometimes we'll be taken advantage of and sometimes we won't be able to fix mistakes or won't be able to take responsibility for something that is very clearly customer error and possibly not fixable. Keeping the customers we have and building on that base is much more cost effective than gaining new customers while existing ones stream out the back door!

One of the major areas in healthcare industry which needs reform is information exchange between physicians and home health agencies. To overcome this difficulty, an organization, H2S (founded in 2013), came up with a new solution. The software automates the patient order management process in order to save time spent by physicians in documentation and decrease accounts receivables for health agencies. This helped health agencies and their referring physicians to send, receive and track patient documents so that providers can be reimbursed for services on time. Why are proactive marketing strategies so effective?

When a company reaches out to someone, it shows that the individual is valued. By taking initiative to include an individual, the company makes itself stand out as an entity to be liked because people tend to like those that like them back. On the flip side, proactive marketing strategies are a win for leaders of companies because it means taking charge of the futures of their companies. Companies develop strategies to reach out to relevant people and acquire a fan base. Being proactive is ultimately a winning situation on both sides because not only can companies take charge of their image and client base, a customer is satisfied as well because they feel valued.

Survey reports cloud technology to increase demand for IT Service Providers

If you are an IT Service Provider, then cloud technology is a potential area where you can look upon to increase your top line. ‘2014 IT Service Provider Benchmarking Survey’ by IT Business Management Software provider Autotask reports that cloud technology is the key driver for ITSPs. For the second year in row, cloud based apps were cited as the number one technology that’s changing clients’ expectations.

Keeping in tune with technological changes, as the demand for cloud services is increasing from clients, ITSPs can see cloud technology as an opportunity to grow their business. Compared to 2013, when increase in revenues was just five to fifteen percent, in 2014 this increase was reported between fifteen to twenty percent by service providers. This growing demand required extra workforce and ninety eight percent of the survey respondents reported increased hiring also.

Though cloud technology is proving advantageous, but security is a main concern and remains top priority for service providers’ clients. ITSPs can overcome this shortcoming by providing security support to their customers, thereby making it an area to grow their business.
